                           7
As soon as the sun came out I rushed out of the house with only my face washed, and ran the 8 kilometers to Tamiko’s house. Tamiko’s grandmother saw me when I got there and came out.
“Well, you came. I’ve been waiting for you. Now, let’s go inside.”
Tamiko’s parents and older sister also came to meet me.
After a moment of silence I finally said, “I would like to visit Tamiko’s grave……”
As soon as I said that Tamiko’s father interrupted, “Well then, let’s go together.”
A new small grave stood just passed the fields and forest.
Tamiko’s grandmother said to me, “Here you go, Masao. Tamiko have been looking forward to today. It would have been great if you could have seen her just once before she passed away……”
I knelt in front of the grave for a long time. Oh, how I wanted to see her. She must have wanted to see me too. I wanted to tell her that even if she’s married my feelings for her will not change.
----Wait. Tami loves wild chrysanthemums. I’ll plant them for her----
I looked around and found that the wild chrysanthemums were blooming all around. Tami is sleeping with the company of her favorite flowers. At last, my heart had found peace.
Tamiko’s family told me about the things that happened on the day before she died.
It was June 17th, the doctor had just said that Tamiko won’t get better.
The next day, upon hearing about Tamiko’s condition, my mother hurried to Tamiko’s house. That day, Tamiko looked well and was able to speak clearly.
    “Tami, please get well again.”
Tamiko smile sweetly. “Aunt, thank you for being so nice to me in the past.”
“Tami, don’t say that. Show some energy.”
“Aunt, it’s better for me to die. I want to die……”
Tamiko seemed to have something else to say, but it couldn’t be heard.
Tamiko died early the next morning without uttering another word.
Tamiko’s mother found that Tamiko was holding something in her left hand, which she held to her chest.
“What Tamiko held in her left hand……It was Masao’s letter and pictures wrapped in red cloth.”
Having said that, grandmother burst into tears. Tamiko’s parents followed while I stared motionlessly at the tatami.
    Grandmother continued.
“When Tamiko’s mother was reading that letter everyone cried. Tamiko’s father and your mother cried so loudly. Tamiko didn’t say anything about you so we didn’t know that she loved you so much……. Tamiko go married because she was forced to. We forced her to get married. She was such a poor girl. She couldn’t do anything about it. So, we have to ask for your forgiveness, Masao. Tamiko thought about you until the last moment of her life. Please try to understand her.”
Finally, I also burst into tears.
“Grandmother, I understand now. But, Tami’s death wasn’t anyone’s fault. I would never blame everyone. I believe Tami also had the same feelings. After all, there’s nothing you could have done. I would like to visit Tamiko everyday while I’m still home.”
For the next seven days, I went to see Tamiko everyday. Around the grave, the gentle wild chrysanthemums were blooming. On the eighth day, I returned to school.

Now, it’s been ten years, but my feelings for Tamiko have not changed, not even a bit.
